Liminal
This week I ran the first ever Escape Method group coaching course – nine super-smart, curious people looking for change. Most were in various states of exit from corporate jobs, but not all – one had just started a job but knew it wasn’t a long term move.
They’re all in a state of transition. There’s a word for it: liminal.
It’s quite a beautiful word. Go on say it out loud, you’ll see. Liminal.
Maybe because I know what it mean I like it so much. Maybe it’s because transition feels so positive to me now, because I’ve done it – and I feel like I’m still doing it, maybe I always will - and that feels exciting.
I’ve always liked change, but like most people I’ve feared its consequences, feared the risk of losing something, feared failing publicly or letting people down.
I look at those nine people who joined my course in this liminal state as brave explorers, eyes, minds and hearts wide open to opportunity.
Because leaving your career after 10+ years isn’t just about changing the way you make money and afford your life; it’s much more fundamental.
It’s about backing yourself; maybe for the first time in a long time.
It’s about going against the grain, maybe a grain that was actually set by other people not you. It’s about being confident enough to suspend your disbelief because you’ve begun to trust yourself. Having faith it will turn out ok.
Because you’re not your twenty year old self doing this. You’ve got much more to offer. More experience and wisdom on which to draw.
You have yourself to fall back on.
And there’s no-one better equipped to help you move forward.

I’ll run the group coaching again in September. Message me if you want to join the waitlist – I’ve already got two signed up, it’ll just be for the first 10.
If you want something a bit less sociable I’ve updated the Escape Plan course on Thinkific – it’s just £30 and has more exercises than in the book. It could really help you move forward over the summer and I’m happy to look through the work you do and provide some feedback or advice.
And there’s the book. SO many people tell me they’re taking it on holiday to read which is lovely – please send photos of you reading it by the sea, the pool, hiking up mountains – thank you so much for your support. I hope it repays you in helping you move forward.
