This week was a good one in the Forbes household, as Bertie, my youngest, got a music scholarship for one of his preferred schools. He plays the saxophone really well but had to overcome a bunch of fears to sing (never easy for an 11 year old boy), so he could use his voice as his second instrument.
Firstly, congratulations Bertie. What a fantastic position he has put himself in. Secondly, love love love this topic! You’re so right Adam. So often we follow a conventional path, because it’s what we think we should do. Sadly it’s often experience and time that gives you the confidence to deviate from that path.
It’s a tough one guiding kids to be themselves and yet recognise a lot of the world values this conventional path and rewards people on this basis. And Bertie has made the choice I hoped he would. So it’s more saxophone and now a bassoon apparently as he gets to learn two instruments!!
